The Last Great Road Surfaces In The UK
The Porsche Cayman was not designed for pot hole ridden UK road surfaces. I was falling out of love with my Porsche Cayman. Then the roads of North Wales saved the day.

Maintenance Wash 18 Months After PPF

Join me in this video as my Porsche Cayman 981 GT4 gets a maintenance wash down at Huntsmiths. Sadly this video was made before the aborted Scotland trip with Eddie. I will need to end the year with wheel liners and under trays off and a proper underbody deep clean to remove all the debris collected on poor UK roads. Love this video, Max! This is the next chapter of Max Revs. What a great personal lesson to share! Very insightful! I recently went through a similar experience with 991 and 992 GT3’s. Decided to stick with my Cayman as the driving experience of the 991 and 992 just did not satisfy me as much on public roads.

Great to see you back Max. That balance is the game of life. Lost count of number of cars I’ve had but each had their place at the time. The ones that bring the smile are all we need. I think my 981 2.7 is awesome all rounder but I also remember taking my Fiat Stilo Abarth out and enjoying the rev matching flappy paddles back then. Life is definitely too short, especially now we know what really makes us tick. Take care and when’s next road trip?

Very good insight Max. I am 53 years of age and about 5 years away from retirement (retire at age 57-59 if all goes well). I have owned many Porsches over the last 25 years. I still own 4 and paid cash for all of them. I have nothing left to prove to anyone, especially MYSELF. MYSELF was usually the hardest to please because of early insecurities and wanting respect and admiration for my success. I am way beyond that now and as we get older and see those we love begin to struggle with health and family we realize material positions are meaningless if you don't have health and family. I too am beginning to pursue my "semi-retirement" frame of mind, which basically means I will continue to work, but only on projects that bring me joy and I find very interesting. The high stress of a high paying corporate job has taken it's toll on my health, family, and mental well being over the years. Life is much better when you have balance and a new way of looking at what work is really for. Best of luck to you. I too have a 987 Cayman S as part of my stable and it's a keeper. It already ticks all the adrenaline boxes I need. Enjoy your new endeavors in good health Max.

Thanks for the honesty. Enjoyed the videos. No shame in stroking the ego with cars, we all do or at least think about it. Much truth in what you're saying...it's like going to a concert and insisting on front row seats (having done this too much). The music is the same and never as good as the studio version anyway. So it is with cars-enjoy the excitement but never as good as our imagination. Drive the 987 and go to a track and rent the rest every now and then and get it out of your system. Much better off.

Mate, it's all about balance. You do the things in life that bring you joy and peace. No one can determine what that is for you; you have to define that for yourself. At the end of the day, life is too short to worry about BS. Give love to those in your life, and make memories that make you smile.

Very nice video to watch, thanks Max! I'm reflecting a lot on this same topic. Do I keep my 987.2 (which I own outright) or buy a relatively new GTS (on finance). All signs are pointing toward keeping the 987.2 but there is some societal pressure to get the new 'alpha' car. Videos like yours make me appreciate what I have a little bit more - including the lack of pressure to pay for finance and, thus, the lack of pressure to overwork. If you do switch to the 987.2, we can proudly attend car meets in our 'classic' cars. I promise, I'll wash my car for thst as well!

If I could get close to my original expenditure on the car back (and all the OCD extras like new full PPF and the AutoFarm underbody work) I’d seriously consider selling my 981 GT4. Though given as the amount I’d be looking for is way above what the UK market suggests I’m not even close to selling. Fortunately I don’t need to sell the car to maintain my cash flow.

Max I enjoyed this video. I totally understand the growth you have had in the last few months of reflection with your car the GT4. I have owned a number of Porsche's in the years and one thing I realized over the years is that there will always be the someone with higher model or cooler car then what you have. For example a GT3RS, 911Turbo S's, GT4RS... When I go to car meets here in Georgia there are usually at least 2 GT3RS's there and all sorts of GT4s, Turbo S's ect.... But when I go to the meets with my son, I pointed out to him yeah their really cool cars and all and perform unbelievably. But they spent a boat load more money on them and look there is another one just like it across the lot or right next to them. I then said to him we are having a wonderful time talking to them and sharing our love of the Porsche marque and it doesn't matter that we showed up in our $40k base Cayman. We love our Base Cayman 981 and have wonderful times with it. You're right it's all about Balance and being to enjoy family, time and your passions. Max I hope you do get into another Cayman 987, 981 that works with your balance of family, life and passion. And I hope you do continue to make videos about your continued journey of your Passion for Porsche. You make great videos and are a great ambassador for the Porsche Cayman regardless of what model you own! Remember enjoy life to the Max ;) Rich Gray Hair Garage

At the very least you got to own your dream car. Not sure I will ever afford a GT4. It would be fun watching a channel of someone with a “normal” Cayman if you chose to go back to that format. Most channels have cars that are somewhat out of reach for most people, and are okay for vicarious living but aren’t overly relatable. Wife and I grew up pretty poor, and feel fortunate to own our base 981s (Boxster for her and Cayman for me). Whatever you decide to do with your channel we wish you and your family all the best, and thank you taking us on your journey.

I retired at the age of 58 from being a civil engineer. I didn't get the rest of my formal education until I was in my early 30's, whilst I was also working full time. It was a jump out of the frying pan and into the oven experience for me. I always had between 8 to 14 large projects to oversee, that I also designed, wrote the specifications for, the bid documents for and handled the pay estimates. The economic crash came and I had the time in, and chose to retire, which also kept some else employed at the time. Since I was good with the financial aspects of my life I decided it was time to purchase the 2010 Cayman S for my efforts in life. I like most just wanted a box to tick for the 3.8 that was offered in the 911 GTS 2nd gen. A lot of 1st gen owners also wanted the 3.8 that was offered in the 911 S. Money isn't everything, it's just a tool, like a wrench in a tool box. Less stress is a God send to me. Best with it Max 👍👍👍!

I wonder if the Danish architect he mentioned is Bent Severin? I worked for Bent who moved to SF after done several projects in Asia and Dubai. In 2007, I went to the Porsche dealer to pickup a 911 but when I saw the Cayman in 2007, I switched to the Cayman because the side vent and the back curves caused such a wow impression... Just upgraded to the 2024 model. But now hearing and knowing about Pinky design intention, I will keep both models.

Great video very informative. I drive a red GR86. The colour is very reminiscent of Rosso Corsa ❤. Obviously that's no comparison to the California. But both share a small similarity regarding form factor which is what attracted me to the GR86. I love that car so much. Very usable as a daily as you do get extended trunk space when when folding dpwn the "back seats". I was debating on either getting an F-Type 4 cylinder or the GR86. Went for the GR as I knew it'd be much less of a headache on everything maintenance - wise. So far that held true. Also, was my forst RWD car and I wanted to learn how to drive these before adding more power. I absolutely love coupes. I will go out of my way to always drive a coupe whatever it may be. If life permits it, at some point I'd like to progress to an Emira, preferably in red with black roof and the V6. I have been warming up to and appreciating Ferrari which is why your clip appeared in my thread. I'd love to one day drive something like the California T or maybe even the Portofino, in Rosso Corsa of course but that's decades and a lot of luck away. Let's see. For now I enjoy the moment in my street legal gocart ❤ fun fact, when I drive on the highway, on the left lane (would be right in the UK), cars get out of the way 😂 cars that easily have >100hp more than me. I guess they think uh something flat and blood red approaching, must be a fast car 😂😂😂

This is such an awesome video. I received an allocation for a GT4 RS with no markup, which is amazing here in the USA. I am trading in my GTS 4.0, which I love dearly. I have a Macan for a daily, and this will be my fun weekend car and track car. But I do live in an urban area and like running around town in my GTS occasionally. Your review of the compliance of the ride is reassuring. Great video!

    • @MAXREVS
      @MAXREVS Місяць тому

WOW!! You got a GT4RS without a dealer markup in the USA? JUMP ON IT if you can afford it without too many consequences financially. I know I would. Depends on your exact use case, and I’m pleased you haven’t mentioned so far you will be taking the car on track. It is an awesome car, though some hard core track people say the front-end steering and suspension cannot handle the power as well as a GT3. This doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I can proudly say I never come near to using 80% of the handling potential of the car. When I made this video the GT4RS impressed me on a more emotional level and I love the engineering that’s gone into that car, and the engine. The only downside you should be aware of depending on how good your hearing is, if you’re going on a 1,000 mile motorway trip the noise inside the cabin from the engine can get a bit much. This is not from personal experience but from multiple actual owners. That is the only downside to openly be aware of. Other than that, make sure you specify the front axle lift, and damn good times are in store for you ahead.

@@MAXREVS Thanks for the reply! I will be taking this to the track, for sure. I like track driving, but it is for my enjoyment, and I do not compete with anyone other than myself. I will probably get in around 6-8 track days per year, do some autoX, and then use this car to tear up the backroads. My one small concern is that I optioned PCCBm, which is supposed to be awesome. Some say the rotors wear quickly on the track, but others say they are pretty durable and a lot of people are basing their views off of old PCCB data. And I found that if/when they need to be swapped out, I can go to the Surface Transform option, which is about half the cost and should last forever. I plan on keeping this car until I can't get in and out of it anymore. Appreciate your awesome review!

So much I could say here, but all depends on a lot of personal factors. If you follow this channel I had a 987.2 S and went to a 981 GT4. For normal use on poor UK roads the GT4 is much less forgiving and you feel all the surface imperfections (pot holes). If you live in the UK you may know what I mean. For track, you are closer to the ground, more power, great steering, less body roll. Will you enjoy your time on track more in the GT4? Debatable… I believe the 987 is just as much fun on track. You need to ask yourself why are you making the switch? Without getting too detailed, I wanted the last proper top spec Cayman imho. I never bought into the 718 platform. The sound characteristics are very different. I personally prefer the 981 GT4 and it has a cracking exhaust on it. Most importantly I would say it comes down to your finances. I had to borrow some money to fund the 981 GT4 purchase. If you don’t have to sweat about the finances I’d say DO IT. If you cannot spend the extra money without some thought, well, maybe think of something else. You definitely selling the 987.2? If you have made your mind up to sell the 987, you could always try something totally different like a GR Yaris?

No rev limiter on the Porsche? I have not seen a care made after 1986 that did not have a rev limiter... Ahh you are speaking over revs due to putting it in wrong gear, that would normally be measured in seconds or fraction of seconds in a cars lifetime and most often 0 ... And if it it measured in hours you are dealing with someone that is beyond stupid lol

Considering you buy the car to drive then it has to be the 981, no competition.

Dam is that normal to speak of factory spec heights without considering corner balance/weights?

Take out all the silencers and all the crap they added to reduce emisions from the 718 and it will sould the same or even better then the 981 depending on what you do to it exactly
